What Car Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn’t Skip

What’s the first thing that comes to our minds when we hear about car maintenance? Oil change! But do you know there’s a lot more to car maintenance than making sure you’re not running flat or changing the oil regularly? Well, here are some car maintenance tasks you shouldn’t skip.

Tire Pressure Check and Tire Rotation

Tires are important for your vehicle to run smoothly and safely. They provide you a good grip that your vehicle needs to accelerate and stop. And because it plays a significant role, it is important to maintain it regularly.

Note that tires inflated to incorrect pressures may cause it to wear quickly, decrease vehicle handling, and may affect fuel consumption. If you don’t have an idea as to the correct tire pressure for your car, you can find it in the owner’s manual or the sticker located on the driver’s side door. The pressure listed are cold pressure. Thus, make sure that you adjust it before you drive extensively.

Friction can cause an increased tire pressure, thereby giving a false reading. It is important that you rotate your tires to make sure that they will wear out evenly.

Regular Air Filter Checks

Having your air filter checked is crucial if you own an older car or if you reside in an area that has high levels of air pollution. Like humans, your car needs air to function. The air that your engine uses passes through the engine air filter. Making sure that this filter is clean will ensure that your engine is delivering a peak performance.

Fuel Filter Replacement

Most cars nowadays have fuel injection pumps. Fuel injectors are essential pieces of equipment that don't respond very well to contaminated fuels. The fuel filter constantly runs while you’re using the vehicle. That means it has a relatively short life. Most cars replace fuel filter every 30,000 miles. However, some have a more aggressive schedule.

Fluid Level Monitoring and Replacement

Your car uses different types of fluid to function properly. So, aside from engine oil change, you need to make sure that you check and replace other fluids as well. These fluids include:
  • Brake fluid: This fluid can be seen in a reservoir. Unlike other fluids, the brake fluid is hygroscopic. That means that it absorbs moisture from the environment over time. Thus, it results to a squishy brake pedal and reduced boiling point of the brake fluid.
  • Coolant and power steering fluid: These fluids can easily be checked by inspecting the reservoir. If the levels are low, you can add fluids. Note that your coolant needs to be tested for quality even if it may seem that it is in good condition.
  • Transmission fluid: This fluid can be checked using a dipstick in the engine bay of an automatic transmission car.  Unlike checking or an oil level, your car should be on idle on a level surface.

It is important to have your car maintained regularly. That way, it can last longer, and its value won’t reduce quickly. Aside from that, a well-maintained car can get you insurance discounts.

Skipping the vehicle maintenance can be expensive. Many vehicle parents don't feel the importance of auto care until something is wrong. Since your automobile is the second most prized investment next to your home, so keeping it in the pristine form is pivotal. You may keep some aftercare errands in the hold, but you can't skip the auto servicing quests like- oil change, tire maintenance, fluid top off, brake inspection etc. That does not mean other maintenance tasks are less significant. Obviously not. Only the fact is, blocking these car care assignments can cause more damage than pausing others for a while. Better you should eliminate your skipping habit, and follow the recommended car maintenance schedule in order to avoid the risk of warranty loss, poor fuel economy, and frequent mechanical breakdowns.

I like you suggestion to monitor and replace different types of fluids used in the vehicle. Such fluid plays key role by lubricating different components of the vehicle and needs replacement after certain time interval. Apart from this, tire pressure and tread depth also needs inspection. Properly inflated tires with better tread depth produces better grip on the road surface and also has positive effects on the fuel economy of the vehicle. So, tires should be properly inflated for better results.

Purchasing a car is the second most prized investment next to home. So we must put stress on it's maintenance. Many vehicle owners don't feel the importance of car care until something goes wrong. But this is wrong thing. One should not skip some very important car servicing quests like oil change, tire pressure check and tire rotation, maintaining the fluid level, air filter check ,brake inspection etc. It doesn't mean than we can skip other maintenance tasks. But blocking these tasks will cause more harm than others.

I appreciate the tips given in this article regarding the importance of regular maintenance. Vehicles needs maintenance at a regular interval for smoother performance of the vehicle. Fluids used in the vehicle for various purpose plays crucial role to achieve such goal. Such fluids also needs replacement after certain time interval for better and smoother performance. A quick inspection of such fluids on a daily basis is really essential. Nothing last for longer period without regular maintenance. Skipping oil change and other important maintenance aspect has significant impact on the performance of the vehicle. The condition of different components of the vehicle should be inspected at a regular interval to evaluate their condition. Engine oil plays crucial role in the performance of the vehicle and skipping an oil change has negative impact on the performance of the vehicle. Apart from this, tire needs maintenance like other components of the vehicle for prolonged lifespan.

I appreciate your suggestion to inspect the condition of different components of the vehicle at a regular interval. Car service and oil change should never skipped. Because it could affect the performance of the vehicle in a very negative way, even could cause breakdown of the vehicle. So, the condition of different components of the vehicle needs to be inspected at a regular interval and abnormal component should be replaced with suitable substitutes to ensure smoother performance of the vehicle. Fluids use din the vehicle also needs to be inspected properly at a regular interval and replacement of degraded oil is also essential to keep the vehicle in good running condition.

Fluctuation in environmental temperature causes fluctuation in tire pressure which needs to be monitored at a regular interval. Properly inflated tire could run for longer time period. So, the tire pressure needs to be monitored at a regular interval and should be properly inflated. Apart from this, tire rotation and proper alignment is really necessary to prolong the lifespan of the tire. Apart from this, different types of fluid use din the vehicle should be monitored at a regular interval.

Tire rotation and wheel alignment are some of the important aspects of regular maintenance which is really essential to prolong the lifespan of the tire. Skipping the tire rotation results in uneven wearing of the tire. So, tread depth of the tire should be inspected regularly and if the tread depth is lower than average, then it should be replaced with suitable substitutes to get better traction on the road surface which also influence the fuel economy of the vehicle in a positive way.

Thanks for helping me understand that most vehicles would have to replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles. I guess we need to take the car to a car mileage interval service to understand if that is the case with our vehicle as well. It is a newer model of car, so I hope that we find a professional who is up-to-date with the modern systems or engines these days.

Hi, you provided a great article on car maintenance. The fuel filter stops contaminating particles in the fuel from entering the engine. It is very important to keep the fuel filter clean because even the smallest contaminant particles have the potential to block the fuel system and harm the engine. Since replacing the fuel filter is necessary to ensure that the vehicle is functioning properly, it is recommended that the filter be replaced regularly.

I totally agree when you said that it is important for the vehicle to run smoothly and safely because of its tires. In that case, getting new ones or ensuring that they are cared for would be a good idea before we go for a long ride next weekend. We should probably look for a tire shop that we can go to this weekend to check any important parts that have to be serviced.

You made a good point when you explained that it is a good idea to have your car serviced regularly. If you are going to have your vehicle serviced regularly, it would probably be a good idea to use the same mechanic every time. Using the same mechanic makes sense because they will be able to keep a record of the things they do to your vehicle.

Properly maintaining your car is essential for safe and effective operation. By regularly checking fluids, filters, brakes, tires, lights, and hoses you can prevent more costly repairs in the future. While there are many tasks that you can do yourself, it is always a good idea to take your car to a professional mechanic for a full inspection at least once a year. Doing this will ensure that all the necessary maintenance tasks are completed and your car runs smoothly for years to come.

Thanks so much for listing the other fluids your car uses to keep running that need to be checked alongside the engine oil. My friend has an old VW that she loves and wants to keep in good shape for as long as possible. She's been thinking about finding a mechanic that specializes in VWs she can take her car to so she can trust it will be maintenanced properly.

Thanks for the great article! The car maintenance task that one should not overlook is an essential component of keeping a vehicle in optimal running condition. The cost-benefit analysis indicates that the costs associated with regular maintenance, such as oil changes, tune-ups and tire rotations, are typically offset by the benefits of reduced cost of repair due to early identification and resolution of potential issues. Regular maintenance can also increase fuel efficiency and prolong the life of a vehicle. Excellent advice. Thanks
